Navigating Womanhood: 5 Things I Do to Embrace the Gift of Being a Woman

Two days ago happened to be International Women’s Day, a day dedicated to celebrating women worldwide.

As a Ugandan woman with an academic background in the biological sciences, I once understood being a woman in very simple terms: having two X chromosomes and nurturing those around me in the best way possible.

And in many ways, that is true.

But over the years, as I have grown through my personal experiences, I have come to learn that there is much more to it.

Womanhood, to me, goes beyond female biology, societal expectations, and the roles we play in order to be recognized as women.

As someone who reflects through movement, journaling, nature, and faith, I have come to understand that womanhood is a lived experience of being and becoming a woman—a journey of identity, self-discovery, and learning what it truly means to be creative, nurturing, and responsible.

In this blog, I share five practices that help me stay balanced as I grow, heal, learn, create, and redefine myself while navigating womanhood.

1. Practicing Yoga as Part of My Weekly Movement Routine

Movement has always been part of my life.

While cycling has taken me across landscapes, practicing yoga brings my energy inward.

Whenever I engage in yoga poses—especially Yin Yoga, a slow-paced, meditative practice that targets deep connective tissues—I am called to gently surrender to gravity.

Unlike fast workouts that push the body outward, this powerful practice asks me to come inward.

With each movement coupled with deep breaths, every session becomes a moment of awareness and a deep scan into my body and the parts that seek tension release.

Consistent practice has taught me to honor the rhythms of my body—its strengths, its weak points, and its need for restoration.

Most importantly, it encourages and empowers the femininity within me, nurturing virtues such as patience, softness, and quiet strength.

In a world that often encourages women to constantly give their energy away, yoga reminds me that it is equally important to draw that energy back home.

2. Mindfulness and the Power of Breath

Another practice that has slowly become part of my daily rhythm is mindful breathing.

Breathing is something we do every moment of our lives, yet we rarely pause to notice its power.

I have come to learn that paying attention to the rhythm of my breath and breathing more deeply brings me into a better space and reconnects me with my personal power.

When I return to myself through breathwork, my mind becomes calmer, my body softens, and my thoughts slow down.

Sometimes this looks like a few quiet minutes of breathing deeply in the morning.

Other times, it simply means pausing during the day—closing my eyes and returning to my breath.

In these moments, I am reminded that I do not have to rush through life.

Breathwork has become a gentle doorway back to presence, helping me create space within myself.

3. Deepening My Relationship with God

What would womanhood be without faith?

One of the anchors that has helped me navigate this journey is my relationship with God.

Life comes with many seasons—moments of triumph and moments of challenge—and all of them call for a connection to the divine creator.

I will be honest: I do not always play my role in this relationship perfectly.

But the beauty of God, as the embodiment of perfect love, is that He is always present and always willing to deepen the relationship I have with Him.

Whenever I can, I bring myself to a place of surrender through prayer, scripture, and allowing faith to shape my perspective.

I do not have to be perfect.

I simply have to be true, open, humble, and willing to keep seeking.

And in many ways, that search has brought a deeper sense of peace into my life.

It is always comforting to receive guidance on how to use the gifts I embody as a woman in service of His will.

4. Journaling and Tapping Into the Muse Within

Another practice that has helped me navigate womanhood is journaling.

Writing has always been a way for me to make sense of the world and my place within it.

When I sit with my journal, I feel closer to myself than ever.

It is a space where I can write my thoughts and feelings freely without judgment, and with each journal entry, I remind myself to end with encouragement.

During the process of writing, I begin to hear the quieter voice within

The one that holds my reflections, ideas, emotions, and dreams.

I like to think of that voice as the muse within.

She often appears in moments of stillness.

Journaling has taught me that creativity is not something distant or mysterious.

It is something that lives within us, simply waiting for space to emerge.

5. Creativity

One of the beautiful things about being a woman is that we not only bring life into the world, we also have the ability to create beauty where there was none before.

And like anything meaningful, creativity takes practice.

For women especially, creativity can be a powerful way of reclaiming our inner voice.

Through writing, art, movement, or design, we give shape to thoughts and emotions that might otherwise remain hidden.

Creativity is often misunderstood as something reserved for artists, musicians, or writers.

But I have come to realize that creativity is much more than that.

It is a way of engaging with life.

It is the ability to notice beauty in ordinary moments.

Sometimes it appears when I sit down to write in my journal and allow my thoughts to flow freely onto the page.

Other times it shows up when I design something inspired by nature.

Creativity invites me to slow down and pay attention.

It connects me to something larger—to inspiration, imagination, and even God’s gift of creation itself.

And the more I nurture creative pursuits, the more I trust that the creative spark within me is a gift worth honoring.

Honoring the Journey

As I continue navigating womanhood, I am learning that it is less about having everything perfectly figured out and more about remaining connected to what nourishes the soul.

For me, that nourishment currently looks like moving my body through yoga, returning to my breath in moments of stillness, deepening my relationship with Christ, writing honestly in my journal, and allowing creativity to flow through the small things I make and notice in the world around me.

These practices help me come back to myself again and again.

They remind me that womanhood is not a rigid definition or a checklist of expectations. Instead, it is a journey of becoming—one that unfolds through reflection, faith, growth, and grace.

On International Women’s Day, I celebrate not only the strength and achievements of women around the world, but also the quiet inner journeys we are all navigating.

To every woman reading this: may you honor your path, trust your becoming, and continue embracing the beautiful gift of being exactly who you are🌸
